Austin's Story Austin became suddenly ill the day after his 3rd birthday in March 2007. Somehow, he contracted a rare life-threatening bacterial infection that severely damaged his upper airway. He was in a medical coma in the ICU for 3 months, and then spent 1-1/2 months in a pediatric rehabilitation hospital. He came home last July with a tracheostomy and lots of medical equipment and interventions. Despite his medical limitation, he was happy, energetic and full of life. Last Fall, he was traveling back and forth to Cincinnati Children's Hospital preparing for airway reconstructive surgery. He was doing great, and scheduled to begin the multi-stage surgeries in the Spring 2008. Upon returning from the January 2008 trip, he fell suddenly ill with a respiratory virus. Austin lost his courageous battle on February 12, 2008, one month shy of his 4th birthday. Austin loved our town. We thought one of the best ways to pay tribute to our little boy is a memorial for him at Heckscher Park across from the playground.
